Willie Nelson was shocked to discover his fans aren’t happy with his decision to headline a rally for Democratic Senate candidate Robert “Beto” O’Rourke.
The country music legend went on The View this week, and said that he simply doesn’t care about what his fans think when it comes to politics.
“Everybody has an opinion,” said Nelson. “Everybody has a right to an opinion. I think I have one too.”
The musician was met with a lot of backlash from fans who were angry with him for showing support for a Democrat. Many insisted that he should “stay out of politics”, or “focus on music,” echoing many American’s sentiments of entertainers sticking to entertaining.
The life-long Democrat, Nelson, didn’t get why people were so upset, saying that he’s “supported Democrats all his life.”
Nelson also said that he enjoys the “flak”, stating that “We’re not happy until they’re not happy.”
O’Rourke is in a hotly contested senate race with incumbent Ted Cruz. Currently Cruz is leading in polls, but the Democratic candidate is extremely close, hoping to be the first Democratic senator to win in Texas since 1993.
While I may disagree with who Willie chooses to support, I’m still going to listen to his music.
