Just as Ricky Ricardo said in I Love Lucy, “You’ve got some explaining to do!” But, this time, it isn’t Lucy who has to be the one to explain things. Seems Google has a little explaining to do themselves.
To make matters more exciting, it was found during a congressional hearing on Tuesday. How embarrassing for someone. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, made Google CEO Sundar Pichai aware that Googling the word “idiot”, brings up several images of our current President, Mr. Donald Trump. Zoe Lofgren then asked Mr. Pichai to explain how his company could allow this to happen.
It’s no secret that President Trump has people out there that do not care for him, but nonetheless, a company such as Google should handle things is a more professional manner.
Google CEO Pichai had this to say when confronted about the situation:
“We provide search today for any time you type in a keyword… we have gone out and stored copies of billions of pages in our index, and we take the keyword and match it against the pages and rank them based on over 200 signals,” Pichai replied. “Things like relevance, freshness, popularity, how other people are using it. And based on that, you know, at any given time, we try to find the best results for that query.”
Lofgren jokingly went on to ask Pichai if there is “a little man behind the curtain” who is rigging search results to go against conservatives. When asked this Pichai rebutled back with:
“We don’t manually intervene in searches”
Apparently Google should find a way to filter what goes through in their searches. Everyone else has to be accountable for their businesses, why should Google be any different. Regardless of your feelings on President Trump, we shouldn’t be feeding into the hype and hatred.
Don’t worry President Trump, we don’t think you’re an idiot, we think you are quite the opposite! Thank you for trying to “Make America Great Again!”
