Democrats are a real tricky bunch. They know the American people have had it with the impeachment hearings, but they can’t back out now. They are way too far gone.
In order to prevent democrats from further tarnishing their personal brands, democrats are bringing in a special counsel to speak on their behalf. There’s no better way to continue this sham, while helping democrats avoid camera time (and looking even worse than they do now) than get someone else to fight their battle.
What makes this a special case is the fact that the special counsel will also be serving as a witness. Here’s a little bit about who the democrats are bringing in:
Barry H. Berke, a New York-based white-collar defense lawyer, has served as the special oversight counsel to the committee since February, working to build the investigative framework that now appears destined to end in the impeachment of Mr. Trump. On Monday, he will take a rare turn at the witness table to present for 30 minutes the facts before the committee and how they square with the law.
Mr. Berke will not be the only House lawyer publicly presenting on Monday. Daniel S. Goldman of the Intelligence Committee will orally present his panel’s two-month inquiry concluding that Mr. Trump abused his office to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rivals. Stephen R. Castor will represent Republicans on both the judiciary and intelligence panels.
But Mr. Berke will be the first witness to speak, setting the tone for the proceeding and a week that could end with the Judiciary Committee voting to recommend impeachment articles.
Well, here’s how Mr. Berke set the tone:
THANK YOU, MR. CHAIRMAN, RANKING MEMBER COLLINS AND ALL THE MEMBERS. BEFORE I HAD THE GREAT HONOR OF BEING A COUNSEL FOR THIS COMMITTEE, MY YOUNG SON ASKED ME A QUESTION. HE SAID, DAD, DOES THE PRESIDENT HAVE TO BE A GOOD PERSON? LIKE MANY QUESTIONS BY YOUNG CHILDREN IT HAD A CERTAIN CLARITY BUT IT WAS HARD TO ANSWER. I SAID, SON, IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT THAT THE PRESIDENT BE A GOOD PERSON BUT THAT IS THE HOPE.
I’ll take “stuff that didn’t happen” for $400, Alex.
Seriously, the guy starts off his entire soliloquy with something you’d read from a tree-hugging cat lady about kids being eerily concerned with the president’s conduct.
It only gets better from there.
THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE. BUT THE JUNIOR DOCUMENT THAT CREATED THIS AWESOME PRESIDENCY AND ITS POWERS THAT WE HAVE MADE CLEAR IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT THE PRESIDENT BE A PERSON WHO DOES NOT ABUSE HIS POWER. IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT THE PRESIDENT BE A PERSON WHO DOES NOT RISK NATIONAL SECURITY OF THIS NATION AND THE INTEGRITY OF OUR ELECTIONS IN ORDER TO FURTHER HIS OWN RE-ELECTION PROSPECTS. IT IS A REQUIREMENT THAT THE PRESIDENT NOT BE A PERSON WHO ACTS AS THOUGH HE IS ABOVE THE LAW IN PUTTING HIS PERSONAL AND POLITICAL INTERESTS ABOVE THE NATION’S INTERESTS. THAT IS THE LESSON OF THE CONSTITUTION.
Now, Rep. Doug Collins noted pretty quickly following Berke’s testimony that he wasn’t asked to testify under oath. That means, nothing he said could be guilty of perjury. He could’ve said President Trump was going to drop a nuke on Mexico, and he wouldn’t face any repreccussion.
Nadler: I’M GOING TO ADMINISTER THE OATH TO THE TWO WITNESSES WHO ARE NOW COMING BEFORE US TO MAKE PRESENTATION. THE TWO GENTLEMEN WHO JUST TESTIFIED WERE NOT WITNESSES, THEY WERE STAFF — THEY WERE MAKING OPENING STATEMENTS FOR THE COMMITTEES. WE WILL NOW ADMINISTER AN OATH TO MR. CASTOR PLANNED GOLDMAN WHO ARE NOW TESTIFYING IN THE FORM OF WITNESSES.
After he was called out by a republican member of the committee, Nadler said that it wasn’t needed for Berke to testify… You know, because that would mean he’d have to legally tell the truth.
Nadler: THE GENTLEMAN WILL SUSPEND. MR. CASTOR WAS HERE WITH MR. BERKE PRESENTING THE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE. THAT IS THE OPENING STATEMENT FOR THIS COMMITTEE. THEY WERE NOT WITNESSES BEFORE THIS COMMITTEE. MR. CASTOR NOW AND MR. GOLDMAN ARE WITNESSES BEFORE THIS COMMITTEE AND I WILL ADMINISTER THE OATH.
It should be noted that the republican counsel, Stephen Castor, was not allowed to ask questions of Berke today.
Some will call it “unprecedented,” but ultimately it’s just wrong.
