The United States Leads The World In Single-Parent Homes

The United States was once a proud nation leading the way in technological and medical advancement. Our way of life was the envy of the world. Now, we lead the world in a different category, and if you look around at our culture it isn’t any surprise.

A Pew study has found that children in the United States are more than 3x more likely to grow up in a single parent home than anywhere else in the world. According to the study, 23% of American children grow up with only one parent living in the home.

In comparison, 3% of children in China, 4% of children in Nigeria and 5% of children in India live in single-parent households, according to Pew. In neighboring Canada, the share is 15%.

There are many reasons as to why children aren’t growing up with both parents in the home. For starters, while divorce rates are down, the number of unmarried people living together are up. There are also government programs that assist single parents, but aren’t available for two-parent families.

Third-wave, “I don’t need no man” feminism hasn’t helped, as it’s now viewed as some point of pride to raise a child all alone, with no man in the home to spread that “toxic masculinity”.

Pew goes on to say:

While U.S. children are more likely than children elsewhere to live in single-parent households, they’re much less likely to live in extended families. In the U.S., 8% of children live with relatives such as aunts and grandparents, compared with 38% of children globally.

Around the world, living in extended families is linked with lower levels of economic development: Financial resources stretch further and domestic chores such as childcare are more easily accomplished when shared among several adults living together.

Ultimately, there are numerous cultural and governmental factors at play that encourage parents to raise a kid by themselves. While studies show that kids do much better in two-parent homes, the reality is that sometimes relationships don’t work. For that reason, people need to really think carefully before procreating. It isn’t fair to future generations to grow up at a disadvantage to their peers simply because they didn’t have multiple adults in authoritative positions pouring into them.

The reasons for our society’s downfall aren’t hard to spot. We just need to fix them. Like most issues, this one starts at home.
