Elizabeth Warren has been under attack over the senator’s claims throughout her career that she is, in fact, Native American. Ever since news of this claim has come back into the media, President Trump, along with help from members of Warren’s own democratic party, have bashed the senator for her hypocrisy. At the democratic debates Warren was put on blast for her “heritage,” and it has been hard to miss the many times Trump has referred to her, jokingly so, as Pocahontas. Her critics state that Warren’s repeated self-identification as a minority is ignorant and reprehensible.
Monday, Warren was in Iowa discussing her plans for the Native American people, if she were to become president. Before beginning, Warren delivered a rehearsed, insincere and vague apology where it is entirely unclear what she is actually apologizing for, saying:
“I know that I have made mistakes. I am sorry for harm I have caused. I have listened, and I have learned a lot.”
Warren’s apology is half-hearted and vague, and offers no context to what she is actually referring to. However, despite these obvious facts, every report about this speech has been “Warren Delivers Heartfelt Apology to Native American People,” or something similar, which is just not true. Now, if this were a white republican claiming to be a minority, receiving benefits and even furthering his or her career because of that false claim, as Elizabeth Warren has, that person would never work in politics again, much less be a front-runner for the party’s presidential nomination.
Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time Warren has failed to clarify her status as a minority. This issue actually dates back more than 30 years with her original claims. In fact, an article written for The Crimson published in 1997 quotes former Harvard Law News Director, Michael Chmura, calling Warren the first ever woman of color hired by Harvard Law:
“In my three years at Stanford Law School, there were no professors who were women of color. Harvard Law School hired its first woman of color, Elizabeth Warren, in 1995.”
You would think that after this news came out, Warren would’ve issued an apology and corrected the statement, righting the wrong she obviously committed. Wrong. Instead, Warren claimed she had ‘no idea’ that she was being billed as a Native American while attending Harvard or how they would have received this information. HOWEVER, this 1997 article goes on to describe how Warren claimed to be a minority in a law professor’s listing for many years prior to being hired by Harvard Law in 1995, yet she has no idea why Harvard would view her as a person of color..?
The reports of Sen. Warren’s Native American status resurfaced a number of years back, triggering outrage towards the senator over the claim. Again, is it too much to ask for Warren just to say “Sorry, I lied. I’m not actually Native American,”? And after more than 30 years of this claim, any rational person would have done this, but not Elizabeth Warren. Instead, the senator insisted on taking a DNA test and sharing the results with the world, in hopes of validating herself as a proud Native American woman. The results laughably showed that Warren claims less than 1% Native American ancestry.
Now it would seem like the time for Warren to finally issue that apology, but instead Warren just claims it was a misunderstanding:
“The distinction is: I’m not a citizen, never have claimed to be, and I wish I had been more mindful of that 30 years ago,”
So, in summary, Elizabeth Warren claimed herself to be a Native American for YEARS, reportedly paid less in tuition as a result, and was possibly hired by Harvard Law due in part, if not in whole, to her minority status. She’s been called out for it multiple times and the story continues to change. And as of yesterday, the media claims she has apologized and been forgiven for all of her wrongdoings, which again is just not true. If this were any republican politician, the story would end very differently. Cancel culture would take hold immediately and that person’s career would be over. But the left can lie and cheat and be as racist as they please without the media batting an eye.
Oh, and still no apology.
