A Stanford University professor caused some waves last week when he said that artificial intelligence (AI) could detect a person’s sexual orientation.
Dr. Michal Kosinski said that during his research AI was able to use facial recognition to determine whether a person was predisposed to criminal behavior, whether they have high IQ’s, and a whole host of other characteristics.
LGBT groups were outraged at the findings, fearing that people could be outed with this newly discovered “gay-dar”, but that is hardly the most interesting find.
According to his research, Kosinski believes that soon, AI will be able to detect a person’s political leanings, solely based off their appearance.
Previous studies show that conservative politicians tend to be better looking than liberals. Kosinski says that AI may not be able to detect a large portion of people in the middle, those on the far-left, or far-right “would be a very reliable prediction”.
“In their first experiment, the researchers showed respondents photographs of political candidates in Finnish municipal and parliamentary elections, members of the European Parliament, U.S. candidates for Senate and governor, and candidates for Australia’s House of Representatives. They asked participants to rate the photographs on a five-point scale. The results suggested that politicians on the right are more beautiful on all three continents.”
What does this mean?
You can bet that political parties will start pouring energy into obtaining as many images of voters they can. Politicians will begin to target those who AI determines are highly likely to vote for them, while ignoring large portions of the population (so, nothing really changes).
At the end of the day, this is just a funny piece of information that you can share with a friend! Have a great day.
