When two groups announced plans for a “No to Marxism” rally at Berkelery’s Civic Center Park, an announcement that prompted plans for a “Sweep Out The Fascists” march. A counter-rally drew hundreds of people downtown.
The ANTIFA, or Short for militant leftists, or occasionally far leftists and radical leftists, often used as a generalization of people who commit to acts of violence against those on the Right side of the political spectrum, started a rally that soon turned violent.
ANTIFA protests in Berkeley turned violent Sunday when one masked group member sucker-punched a detractor and other agitators smashed the windows at a Marine Corps recruiting post, cellphone video showed.
After I filmed the antifa break the Marine Corps office window and throw a torch into a dumpster, one of them called a few over to confront me. They basically told me to leave, implying attack if I didn't. I left. "Get the fuck back. Cops aren't here. They won't help you." pic.twitter.com/7m8WkNmOy9 — Ford Fischer (@FordFischer) August 6, 2018
Police Officers arrested 20 people during the California demonstrations that day. Three people suffered minor injuries after a group of protesters through what were believed to be fireworks and/or flares at police and the Sheriffs on scene. Through all the chaos, no police officers were hurt during the altercation.
Ford Fischer, a filmmaker, took to his Twitter and posted video of the incident.
“No police were around as the black bloc traveled down the street, and a handful used hammers to smash the windows of Shattuck Ave US Marine Corps Recruiting office,” Fischer said in his Tweet.
He also went on to say, “After I filmed the antifa break the Marine Corps office window and throw a torch into a dumpster, one of them called a few over to confront me. They basically told me to leave, implying attack if I didn’t. I left. ‘Get the f— back. Cops aren’t here. They won’t help you.”
Not only did they damage the Marine Corps Recruiting Office, they also damaged 21 city vehicles, slashing tires and even set one of the, on fire. They even went so far as to set trash cans on fire. The trash cans were extinguished rather quickly, but the car fire took more time.
Berkeley Police even took the the internet with posts of their own, showing someone in handcuffs with weapons they confiscated from the protesters.
Police stated that neither side of the protest gathered the proper permits to stage a protest. Friday approached and police issued a statement prohibiting mask and weapons of any kind in Ohlone parks, as well as the Civic Center.
Despite this statement, many members of Antifa were seen in videos wearing masks and carrying weapons of all sorts.
The protests in California were followed just a day after similar protesters clashed with each other in Portland, Oregon.
